About First Crack
First Crack is a small publication about brewing better coffee at home. The name is the roasting milestone — the moment beans audibly crack and coffee starts becoming coffee — and it felt right for a site about the moment brewing stops being a routine and starts being a craft.
It is written by one home brewer in Central Europe with a scale, a thermometer, an aging grinder, and a mild inability to leave variables alone. No café, no roastery, no credentials beyond several years of methodical kitchen-counter testing — which is exactly the point. Everything here is written from the position of the reader: someone brewing at home, on home equipment, with a normal budget and a job to get to.
What you’ll find here
Methods and explanations, tested and re-tested before publishing: brew recipes that state their reasoning, gear guidance organized by category rather than model-of-the-month, and plain-language versions of the chemistry that actually changes the cup. Where something is folklore, the articles say so; where the honest answer is “it barely matters,” they say that too.
What you won’t find here
Sponsored reviews, affiliate-driven “best grinder 2026” listicles, or ten-step rituals that exist for the camera. The site’s consistent editorial position is that most of good coffee is a few boring virtues — measurement, freshness, repetition — and that anyone selling shortcuts around them is selling something.
